OLGS 015 NOW AVAILABLE!

August 26, 2010

Ladies and Gentleman, Hobo's and Tramps,
Cross-eyed mosquitoes and bow-legged ants,
I come before you to stand behind you,
To tell you something I know nothing about.

Next Thursday, which is Good Friday,
There will be a Mother's Day meeting for fathers only;
Admission is free, just pay at the door,
Pull up a seat and sit on the floor.

The topic to discuss...
The crime that has never been committed.

One fine day in the middle of the night,
Two dead boys got up to fight,
Back to back they faced each other,
Drew their swords and shot each other.

One was blind and the other couldn't see,
So they chose a dummy for a referee.
A blind man went to see fair play,
A dumb man went to shout 'hooray!'

A paralysed donkey passing by,
Kicked the blind man in the eye,
Knocked him through a nine inch wall,
Into a dry ditch and drowned them all.

A deaf policeman heard the noise,
And came to arrest the two dead boys,
If you don't believe this story’s true,
Ask the blind man he saw it too!

Enjoy the mix!

MUTEK in Montreal... Early June

June 22, 2010

The search for Techno began on June 2nd, 2010.

After a minor mishap on our flight to Montreal via Toronto involving a passenger having a seizure on the plane, which thankfully did not require any serious medical intervention - leaving the plane under his own strength, we arrived in Montreal in time to grab a quick bite at the House of Jazz and head off to take in a football match involving AC Milan & Montreal Impact at Stade Olympique. To my sadness, AC Milan won 4-1. Not that I'm a fan of the Montreal Impact, I'm just not a fan of AC Milan!

June 3rd saw my wife and I and a couple friends rent a car and head up to Quebec City for the day. Walking around old Montreal around the Citadelle and Chateau Frontenac was awesome. What a beautiful Place. If you ever get a chance to hit up QC, make sure to stop in at Tatum Cafe Bistro for a burger and a pint!

June 4th brought the beginning adventures of what was to be an absolutely monumental weekend. MUTEK!!!!!

We started by hitting up the Serato/Abelton workshop. From there it was off to the Q&A with Mouse on Mars. This Q&A was probably the most mind opening moments of my entire trip to Montreal. Basically, what I took from this Q&A was, make what you make. Don't over analyze things and don't try to control what’s created in the peripheral as a result of what you are creating at the time. If you do, you will continue for days trying to create something you might never be happy with. Rather, embrace the peripheral and allow it to help create something you could have never created on your own! After the Q&A we headed over to play in the MOOG store to drool over equipment and then to INBEAT where I picked up some vinyl you can hear in my June OLGS mix.

Then it was off to MutekHQ for some crazy performance art dude. What he was doing was awesome, but it really hurt my ears. It was off to Soda and SAT from there and then the finale of our Friday night we ended up at Stereo Nightclub to see Mateo Murphy, Voodeux and Claude von Stroke!! Door price was $35 each but the flyer was printed wrong and said $30. Entrance for $30 was granted... BRILLIANT!!!!!!!!!!!!!! The club was awesome and the Acts even better! What a night! Around 6am it was back to the hotel for some rest and a new day of adventures!

June 5th was no short day either! Pikinc Electronik at about 1pm to catch Minilogue, Koze, Paul Kalkbrenner which were brilliant to say the least! The skies opened up and started to pour half way through Koze's set and the intensity in the crowd increased. Normally people would flock for cover. But just the opposite happened, people crowded up in front of the stage. What a great experience! I will head to Piknic any chance I get when I'm in Montreal! Something about being absolutely soaked, and getting a grilled cheese sandwich from the concessions that just kicks ass!!! 9pm rolled around and it was closing time at the park.

Without stopping back at the hotel for some dry clothes, because there was no time to waste, it was back to SAT to see Ben Frost perform and AWESOME set of.. I don't even know how to describe it other than an Atmospheric Soundscape. This was really cool to see and a welcomed sidestep from the 4/4 beats we were surrounded by all day. Only then was it time to head back to the hotel to change, grab some eats and head back out.. This time to METROPOLIS.

Metropolis - WOW!!! What a heavenly place for music. Jumping between Metropolis & Savoy, as well as heading down to Circus to see my friend Axel Klein play, we sadly missed Henrik Schwarz, which we were told was the highlight of the weekend by many. However we did get the opportunity to catch Guillaume Coutu Dumont & The Side Effects as well as Konque and Dixon, which was a brilliant way to close off a Saturday Night.

It was at this point, after arriving back at the hotel at 7am, we were convinced that our door guy thought we were absolutely nuts. Showing up at 6-7am every morning leaving at 11-12 again back at about 10pm and then out again not to return back until 6am. Keep in mind this wasn't your "normal" hotel. This was the Chateau Versailles, a 60 some odd room Character hotel in the Golden Square Mile of historical downtown Montreal.

The final day saw us finally take in some rest before heading out to Piknic, which was at Metropolis due to rain. Partying in a club in the afternoon is one of the coolest experiences there is! Saw some great acts again in the afternoon there and then headed out for a walk around Old Montreal by Vieux-port and then out in search of food once again, this time with a group of 11 people all from Winnipeg. Not knowing where to go for eats, and after iphones piss poor suggestions failed, we headed up into the gay quarter and stumbled upon a nice little Italian restaurant which was nice enough to let us sit down for food 30min before closing. Then it was a very long walk back to the hotel where it was time for bed again and a day of shopping before heading home.

Overall the MUTEK was a fantastic experience, it was worth going just for Piknic Electronik and for all the awesome clubs and music in Montreal! I can't wait to get back there!!!!

VIVA MONTREAL!!!

I would like to apologize to all my followers of this series and the listeners of Groovenrg and Techno.fm for not having this mix available for last weeks shows! Unfortunately I could not get this issue fixed until just recently. However the mix is here now, and it is available for download as usual.

For those that tune into the stations that air my show. May's broadcast will air as scheduled!

Deadmau5 Hospitalized after fight

April 1, 2010

Deadmau5 is being treated in a hospital following a fight during the Miami Winter Music Conference with Felix da Housecat.

The Canadian DJ, real name Joel Zimmerman, is having one of his ears reconstructed at Mount Sinai Medical Center in South Beach, Miami after the two men came to blows on Sunday night.

The fight started during Deadmau5’s headline set on the main stage at the Ultra Music Festival.

Speaking to Mixmag from the Miami hospital, Deadmau5’s manager told us this morning “He was just mixing out of 'Faxing Berlin' when Joel looked to the side of the stage and saw Felix tucking into his rider. Joel gets quite funny about having a full cheeseboard ready for when he comes off stage so when he saw Felix with his paws in his brie he went ballistic and threw a can of Heineken at him.”

Felix da Housecat, best know for spearheading the electroclash movement, did not react well to being hit by a full can of the premium strength lager and pounced on Deadmau5 - much to the delight of the baying American crowd.

Around 12,000 festival goers watched on the main stage’s big screens as Deadmau5 was pinned to the floor by the obviously more dominant Housecat.

One onlooker, who posted a clip of the event on Youtube, described Felix’s fighting technique as ‘just toying with him’.

Despite the cuts to his ear and being treated for shock, it’s thought Deadmau5 will still be OK to headline Cream Ibiza on September 2 during the Mixmag and DSI Ibiza Holiday.

In a statement released yesterday Felix claimed “He got what was coming to him. It serves him right for acting such a damn fool”

Welcome!!

March 25, 2010

Hi everyone, I hope all is well and thanks for stopping by!

It's been a long time coming, but the wait is over. I have finally updated my website to something a bit more modern. The old site, if any of you remember, was a bit dated. If you don't remember or have never been, consider yourself lucky! It was a good starting point... 8 years ago, but was in major need of an overhaul.

Many changes to this site have been made, the biggest I'm sure you've noticed being the inclusion of "JOHN NORMAN". Who is 'John Norman'? Well, Me! All my productions being released will be under the name John Norman, so if you are looking for a track online that I've produced, it's likely going to be found under the name 'John Norman'. So try searching for that. If you'd like help narrowing your search, just hit up the Discography in the music section. That should help sort you out. While your there, feel free to feast on the mixes I have available. There will be more that come a long so if your keen to new and or older mixes, you'll find them there. No more scowring the web for them, you want them, that's where you can be sure you'll find them! And if it's not, send me an email and I'll do my best to get it to you.

Other changes made are the inclusion of a nicer photo section which will be updated with more recent photos from events I've attended and/or played at.

Some other things I've included are direct links to the streams for my radio shows, just check the time that the show is on, and hit your selected stream choice. There is also a shoutcast app you can get for your iPhone, should you be using one to view this site. Click the link, all the instructions are there.

One of the things that hasen't changed is my Chart section. Every month will feature a new top 10 chart with a sample of the #1 track I've chosen for that month.

I really hope you enjoy the new site! Just remember, if you'd like to contact me with feedback or a general question you would like privately answered, hit up my email address located in my contact section!

Thanks again for stopping by!

Cheers,
John
